What music based workshops do we offer ?

 

 

Circus Skills

Samba Drum is an exciting and vibrant expression of the rhythms of South America

 

This is a great opportunity for your students to participate in a unique and memorable experience.

 

Percussion is the oldest form of musical expression and yet the most accessible to the broadest spectrum of abilities.

 

The combination of Culture, History, Rhythm and Energy culminate in an Educational and fun package that is guaranteed to be a resounding success.

 

 

The workshop will include:

 

An introduction to samba detailing its historical roots, the rhythms and their origins, the traditions, parades and their meanings.

 

A look at the diverse array of drums, their names, usage, roots and importance in the ensemble.

 

A demonstration of each drum and it’s varying timbres and how it is used within the context of the band.

 

The Students will then play the various parts and get some hands on experience of different drums.

 

We will look closer at the Clave, the lead vocal of the Samba orchestra.

 

The program will culminate in a hands on “Batucada”, Brazillian for a samba jam session, featuring unison drumming, polyrhythms and call and response, climaxing with the introduction of the clave.

 

Fire Breathing

Dj’s are now artist’s in their own right.
DJ’s have become part of the creative process themselves by using mixing, scratching and beat matches to create new pieces of music.

 

 

 

 

The workshop will include:

 

Equipment set-up and equipment  functions
Turntables, mixer, amplifier and cartridges
Leads and Connections
Setting the tone arm weight

Beats, Bars and Phrasing
Tempo and BPM (beats per minute)
How tracks are structured - beats, bars and phrases
Finding the first beat of the bar
Cueing a track using faders and pre fade (cue) controls

Drop Mixing
Use this technique to switch between styles and tempos
Matching levels
Cueing and crossfading

Know Your Music
Reading vinyl grooves
Spotting tunes that work together
Reading the crowd

Beat matching
Learn to adjust speed of the record using pitch controls.
Manually adjust the speed of the record
Pitch shifting
Crossfading smoothly

Record your mix
Basic recording and editing
Burn your mix to CD
Stilt Walking
